Facade Thermal Panels: The Complete Guide to Exterior Wall Insulation

If you’re planning to renovate your home’s exterior or build new, you’ve probably run into the term “facade thermal panels” and wondered how they compare to traditional insulation and siding. Here’s what they actually are, how they’re made, and what to expect.

What Are Facade Thermal Panels?

Facade thermal panels are ready-to-install insulation panels that combine thermal insulation and decorative exterior cladding in one product. Panels are available in two insulation types — Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) or Extruded Polystyrene foam (XPS) — paired with a decorative facing layer of clinker, ceramic tile, or ceramic granite.

How Thermal Panels Are Made

The tile is pressed into the insulation base through multiple compression cycles, with a load of 6,600 pounds per panel. A polyurethane adhesive penetrates up to 1.57 inches deep into the insulation, and each finished tile can withstand a pull-off load of more than 105 pounds. This creates one unified structure rather than two loosely bonded materials.

Panels also include:

  • Hidden “rondel” fastening elements combined with metal hammer-drive anchors, so panels attach without visible hardware and without structural settlement over the facade’s lifespan
  • A quarter lock system around the panel perimeter that prevents thermal bridges and cold spots by forming monolithic coverage without gaps
  • A non-combustible, fire-resistant insulation core

Why Homeowners Choose Thermal Panels

  • Energy efficiency— the monolithic construction eliminates potential heat loss
  • 50+ year service life— after proper installation, the facade requires no regular maintenance
  • Lightweight— panels range from 15–20 pounds
  • Year-round installation— the “dry” installation method allows installation from 14°F to 95°F; grouting of joints specifically should be done in dry weather above 41°F, which is why many clients install panels in winter (when prices are lower) and grout in spring
  • Easy repairs— if one or several tiles are damaged, individual elements can be replaced without removing the whole panel
  • Weather resistance— panels resist sudden temperature changes and precipitation
  • No frost resistance cycles needed, since the tile and insulation layer are monolithically connected

How Long Does Installation Take?

For a 2,000 sq ft house, an experienced team of 2–3 specialists typically needs about a month for turnkey completion. Installers with no prior experience with thermal panels will need extra time for training, which is why the manufacturer recommends working with experienced professionals.

What Determines the Cost of Facade Insulation?

Pricing depends on:

  • Facade area
  • Insulation type and thickness (EPS or XPS)
  • Tile brand and color
  • Type, color, and amount of grouting compound
  • Quantity, size, and type of fasteners
  • Amount of glue-foam
  • Additional services: tool set, installation, and delivery

The 7-Step Process

  1. Thermal panel selection— choose insulation type plus tile color/texture and grouting
  2. Contact— submit a request; a manager follows up on details and preferences
  3. On-site measurement— performed directly at the construction site
  4. Technical calculation— AutoCAD drawings plan the placement of facing materials
  5. 3D visualization— preview how the house will look after insulation, factoring in cost
  6. Delivery— panels and accessories transported to any state and city in the USA
  7. Installation— full installation performed, or expert supervision provided for other crews
